Findlater’s Corner is one of Southwark’s oldest and most historically significant locations, situated at the southern end of the Roman and Medieval London Bridge. The area is renowned for its connection to the iconic railway arches and viaduct that were constructed in 1863, when the Southeastern Railway extended its lines to Cannon Street and Charing Cross Stations.

Named after the Scottish wine merchants Findlater, Mackie, and Todd, who established a popular shop in the arches, Findlater’s Corner became widely known across London due to its bold and eye-catching shopfront visible from London Bridge. Over time, the location came to be known by the name of the original business that once occupied the site.

Monson Engineering was appointed to work alongside a multidisciplinary design team to restore and reopen five of the railway arches on the London Bridge Island site. This site is strategically located next to London Bridge Station and Borough Market, offering easy access to many of London’s most famous tourist destinations. Notably, Findlater’s Corner stands out for its historical significance, featuring a decorative clock and faience tiles that face London Bridge.

As part of our involvement, we conducted a comprehensive review of the existing drainage infrastructure across the ground and basement areas, assessing suitability for future retail fit-outs. We determined the maximum capacity of the existing drainage system for handling foul water flows and designed a new surface water drainage system. Additionally, we worked on a secondary waterproofing design, collaborating with Thames Water to ensure that the flood prevention measures met the necessary standards for the risk of flooding in the basements.
