Monson Engineering is proud to have provided the civil and structural engineering design consultancy services for the new Otterpool Waste Transfer Site at the former quarry in Kent.

Developed for Countrystyle Recycling, the new facility represents a significant investment in modern waste-management infrastructure across East Kent and will play an important role in supporting sustainable waste-handling and recycling operations throughout the region.

The new waste transfer site has been designed to process up to 75,000 tonnes of commercial and construction waste annually, helping improve operational efficiency, reduce transport movements, and increase recycling and material recovery rates.

Monson Engineering was appointed to deliver a comprehensive package of civil and structural engineering services for the development, supporting both the planning requirements and detailed engineering design phases of the project.

Civil Engineering Design Services

Our civil engineering scope included the design and coordination of key infrastructure elements required to support the operational performance and environmental compliance of the facility, which included:

  • Surface water drainage design and hydraulic modelling

  • Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) strategy development

  • Foul drainage investigations and infrastructure design

  • Engineering layout and cut-and-fill modelling

  • Road construction detailing and operational yard design

  • Highway access and Section 278 design works

  • Drainage management and maintenance planning

"A key aspect of the project involved developing practical and robust drainage solutions suitable for the operational demands of a modern waste transfer facility while addressing the challenging site conditions and long-term environmental considerations."

Structural Engineering Design

Monson Engineering also delivered the structural engineering design package for the facility, including:

  • Portal frame structural design

  • Foundation and floor slab design

  • Push wall and retaining wall detailing

  • Wash-down pit structural design

  • Reinforced concrete detailing

  • Structural coordination for operational and loading requirements

The structural solutions were carefully developed to support the heavy-duty operational demands associated with waste handling, vehicle movements, and material storage.

"Supporting Sustainable Infrastructure in Kent"

The Otterpool Waste Transfer Site incorporates a range of modern operational and environmental features, including dedicated waste segregation areas, reinforced operational yards, advanced fire prevention systems, and significant emergency water storage infrastructure.

The project reflects the growing demand for sustainable infrastructure that supports the circular economy while enabling efficient and environmentally responsible waste management operations.

At Monson Engineering, we are proud to contribute our civil and structural engineering expertise to projects that support long-term sustainability, infrastructure resilience, and operational efficiency.

A fantastic project to be involved with and another great example of Monson Engineering supporting sustainable infrastructure development across the South East.
