Craigmore Hall in Crowborough, East Sussex represents a thoughtful transformation of a historic building into a high-quality residential development.
The scheme combines heritage and modern living, delivering a mix of apartments within the original hall, dated late 19th century and new-build houses across a carefully planned site of approximately 0.42 hectares.
The development provides a low-density, boutique residential environment, aligned with its tree-lined suburban setting and proximity to Ashdown Forest.
Key features include:
Sustainable design elements
Integration of new-build homes alongside retained historic character
Landscape-led design supporting ecological and visual quality
A key engineering aspect of the project was the conversion of the existing basement into habitable living space. This was achieved through the incorporation of lightwells to introduce natural daylight and a comprehensive basement waterproofing strategy, ensuring long-term durability and compliance with residential standards.
Monson provided the civil and structural engineering design necessary to enable the residential development of this site. This included supporting the transformation of a period property, coordinating infrastructure design, and ensuring efficient delivery of new housing within a constrained and sensitive location.
The project highlights how engineering design plays a critical role in unlocking complex residential sites—balancing heritage, sustainability, and modern living standards.
